Stone + Cage + 9/11 = Greatness???

Hey guys, it's Donnie...Okay, I'll be the first to admit it: Oliver Stone has not been at the top of his game recently. Alexander? Not so much Ollie. Sorry. However, this weekend I watched Natural Born Killers and The Doors and was reminded of why Oliver Stone is one of the great filmmakers of our time. Talk about a guy with vision. Or visions, take your pick.

Well this came out on Friday and I kind of looked over it, but after re-watching some of his greater works, I'm actually pretty excited about this announcement. Stone's next project will star Nic Cage and will tell the story of John McLoughlin and William J. Jimeno, both Port Authority police officers and the last two survivors pulled from the wreckage of World Trade Center. The story will focus not only on the two officers, but also on their rescuers and their families, struggling to find out what happened to the two men in the weeks that followed.

9/11 has certainly been a tricky experience for filmmakers. There have certainly been alot of films that try to directly address the aftermath, some more eloquently than others. Two of my favorites have been The 25th Hour and The Guys. But no one has had the balls to really take the event itself head on. Oliver Stone is a guy who really knows how to use a film to pack a political punch, and yet at the same time gives great care and attention to his characters. If Stone can find the proper balance here, this could be one hell of a theater going experience. Seeing a recreation of the explosions and collapse of the towers...that's intense as hell. Talk about art imitating life imitating art...
