Pee Wee Re-Opens The Playhouse??
Hey guys, it's Donnie...Ever since October 18th, I've been watching Batman movies like a fiend. I hadn't seen Batman Returns in quite some time, and boy was I surprised to notice that the Penguin's father at the beginning of the film was played by none other than Paul Reubens, Pee Wee Herman himself. I LOVED Pee Wee's Playhouse as a kid (in fact, I suspect I would still like it today if any TV stations every played it) and Pee Wee's Big Adventure...well if it weren't for that film, Tim Burton may never have gotten to direct the Batman we all know and love. (See? Everything comes full circle.)
Well, The Arclight Theater in Hollywood recently held a screening of Big Adventure with Reubens in attendance for a little Q&A action. Someone had the good sense to ask him if we'd ever see Pee Wee again, to which Reubens held up two scripts and said that each was a very different Pee Wee Herman film that he'd like to make. One is more in the vein of Playhouse, and would see Pee Wee setting out to rescue the kidnapped King of Cartoons. This one has an unnamed producer attached, although that's as far as it's gotten so far. Reubens had literally just finished writing the other script and it had yet to be seen by any of the Hollywood big shots. That film would actually be an R-rated adult film (no, not that kind of adult film) in which Pee Wee gets out of prison (for unspecified reasons) and joins a lumberjack community, only to record a pop single and become a fame seeking asshole.
Personally, the nostalgic part of me would absolutely love to see Pee Wee make a return to the big screen. I think we've been sadly short on absurd comedy of that ilk recently, and imagine if they could somehow drug Tim Burton and convince him to direct again? Jesus that'd be trippy as all hell...
